The New Tennis ProAugust 30, 2011
Hayman Activities is now home to brand new championship style tennis courts.
Hayman’s Tennis Director, John Ciarleglio, shows me around the new facility that features three grass courts and one very special hard court. The Plexicushion hard court is the same surface used at the Australian Open.
John has coached tennis all over the world from Dubai to Switzerland to the Bahamas but says Hayman’s courts are unique because they combine action with intimacy.
“On one hand there’s the action around [the Activities Centre] but it’s also surrounded by these beautiful gardens which give players privacy. Not many places can do both.”
I have a hit with John on the professional Plexicushion court. I’m surprised at how well it grips, I feel like a pro already.
“It’s a great surface because it offers excellent grip and bounce but it also absorbs shock very well, so it’s not as hard on your knees”.
John is more than happy to have a hit with guests, offering private lessons and clinics.
“If they beat me, it’s free,” says John with a grin.
I don’t think I’ll be winning a match against John anytime soon.
