TURTLES
In November, six species of turtles, including the Green Sea Turtle, Leatherback Sea Turtle, and Loggerhead Sea Turtle, come to breed in the Great Barrier Reef.
This is a real treat for divers and snorkellers who gladly enjoy increased numbers of these amazing creatures.
Green Sea Turtles have been known to lay their eggs on the Hayman Beach, and Hayman takes great care in making sure the turtles and their eggs are left undisturbed. The eggs usually hatch in February at Hayman.
A baby turtle is born with a large shell, which is called a carapace. This protects the animal from predators.
Although many turtles spend large amounts of their lives underwater, all turtles breathe air, and must surface at regular intervals to refill their lungs. They can also spend much of their lives on dry land. This means they are easy to spot!
