BLUE TIGER BUTTERFLY

Out and about on the hottest of days, the Blue Tiger Butterfly gives vegetation a stunning black-blue appearance.

These butterflies are no strangers to Hayman.  On Captain Cook’s first journey to the coast of Queensland he reported seeing droves of them.

To catch a glimpse of these electrifying blue creatures, you will have to look in shady areas, closer to the ground, perhaps on twigs and dead branches.

Interestingly, the poisonous milkweed plants the butterfly eats gets absorbed by its larvae and becomes a means of protection against birds eating the butterfly.

As the Blue Tiger Butterflies start disappearing, summer butterflies, like the Wonderer, Large Grass Yellow and Purple Crow, begin appearing.
