DUSKY MOORHENS

In March, Dusky Moorhens can be seen making shallow nests amongst the lily pads in the Hayman Lily Lagoon.

Interestingly, Dusky Moorhen females often lay their eggs in the same nest, and as a group help in raising the young.

With dark feathers, a white under-tail, and a yellow-tipped red bill, the Dusky Moorhens on Hayman are a pleasure to watch.

These beautiful birds feed both in water and on land. However, their main food sources include algae, water plants and grasses, which help to maintain the fresh water Lily Lagoon.

Though a relatively small bird (40-45cm in length) the Dusky Moorhens have a very distinct loud call which complements the natural symphony of sounds surrounding Hayman.
