BOOBOOK OWL & BIRDS OF PREY

Characterised by largely brown plumage with white spots, the Boobook Owl gazes out at the nature of Hayman with its large curious eyes.

The Boobook is especially active during June. Listen for the Boobook’s distinctive call which sounds as if the bird is saying “mo-poke”.

You will most likely find the Boobook sleeping in the hollows of trees during the day – recovering from the previous night’s hunt.

This modest nocturnal hunter is actually the smallest of Australia’s owls however this owl’s soft feathers which effectively eliminate the sound of its wings flapping, make this bird a fantastic hunter, allowing it to successfully catch prey.

Birds of prey, such as White Breasted Sea Eagles and Brahminy Kites, are also out and about since they are typically in courtship during this time. Sea Eagles and Ospreys are also nesting around the island during this time.
