WHALES AND DOLPHINS

Thirty species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises have been recorded in the Great Barrier Reef, including the Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin, Dwarf Minke Whale, and the Humpback Whale.

During the winter months, divers can often hear whales singing in the water. At Hayman, this starts in July and continues until it fades out in September.

At this time, you may also spot Humpback Whales, which migrate from the chilly waters of Antarctica to the warm Great Barrier Reef to give birth and nurse to their calves.

All whales and dolphins are protected species in the Great Barrier Reef, however Dwarf Minke Whales often come close to boats and swimmers, with normally up to 200 whale sightings per season in the Great Barrier Reef .
