MANTA RAYS
Due to the slightly cooler water temperatures at this time, Manta Rays are often spotted around the Whitsundays and the Outer Barrier Reef.
Manta Rays found in the tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef are the largest rays on earth and can measure up to 7 metres across.
Manta Rays are a filter feeder with prominent feeding flaps and eyes that rest on top of each. Whilst other types of Rays prefer to stay close to the ocean floor, Manta Rays like to skim the waters surface and enjoy the shallow coastal areas and reef which the Whitsundays offers.
Notably, the Manta Ray is the next largest species in the Great Barrier Reef after the whale, weighing up to a couple hundred kilograms.
